After a research process about the Templebar neighborhood, while developing the concept for a wider project, I found people and stories that have allowed me to have a better idea and appreciation of what has happened and is happening there, beyond guidebooks, maps, institutions and pubs of false dates depicting apparent age. I invite you, through this small curated event developed at my curatorial residency at TempleBar Gallery + Studios, enjoy the virtual wall of Crampton Buildings made by Margaret Tuffy, Joe Hanly´s video of TempleBar square which takes us back in time, my own photographic portraits of local people and a private tour of the Crampton Buildings. These artworks will give insight and understanding, that beyond a neighborhood of bars, galleries, restaurants and shops, there are wonderful people full of stories and experiences more enriching than any imput you can receive in those spaces, normally filled with entertainment on the outside but empty on the inside. A project organized/curated by Jon Irigoyen Project´s opening was launched at 2011 Culture Night and developed inside Temple Bar Gallery + Studios curatorial residency, Dublin. The Helsinki city urban development plan for the areas of Sörnäistenranta and Hermanninranta will be a starting point for the process. The workshop will explore the positive and negative effects of this change and how they are visible in the everyday reality. EXPEDITION Saturday 18.6 12.00-17.00h: Urban Expedition + Analysis and discussion Starting point at Sörnäinen metro station (Vaasanpolku entrance, near to ‘Otto’ machine). We will start with a picnic nearby, please bring a contribution of food/snacks/drinks, and afterwards we will walk around Kallio’s public space. The walking tour will concentrate on traces of change in the neighbourhood: what are the things that mark the old times and what are those that mark the new ones? What is happening in the area: gentrification, displacements, new buildings and their symbolism.. During the walk we will discuss how public spaces are used and perceived, and we will add our comments and suggestions and we will realize some smalls interventions in the area. PROJECT DEVELOPMENT Kallio expedition will get into the recent and future developments in Kallio and its surroundings. Kallio is slowly turning from a traditional working class neibourghood into an expensive and fashionable downtown area. This development is fuelled partly by the invasion of a creative class that brings with it a new urban energy to the neibourghood. Suddenly the area turns into something desirable, streets get clean and the real estate prices go up. Another important factor in the transformation process of Kallio is the urban development happening around it. As the downtown area expands into the former industrial areas on the seaside of Sörnäistenranta, and into the Vallila railway yard for eample, Kallio will become closer to the city center. What is happening in Kalasatama and Suvilahti will also affect the real estate prices in the east part of Kallio and Sörnäinen. This will have a huge impact to the whole cultural climate of Kallio. The cleaning up of Sörnäinen will be a great challenge but will most probaby be accomplished as the areas around will change too. The Katri Vala park has already undergone a serious face lift, which is a strong signal of the new winds blowing. But according to what has happened in other cities around the world, eventually the creative class will have to escape the high prices and the wealthy upper class will move in. This might mean that Kallio will turn into another Punavuori, sooner or later. This is the dream of city planners and will be of course absolutely fine for many others. But perhaps there is a downside to this kind of development that should be explored? The project consists in an audiovisual public space intervention and 2 workshops, in Bogota, and Taganga (North caribbean) Colombia. People designate home as the physical place, with four walls and defined by tangible elements, but it is a non-physical space as well, furnished by emotions, experiences, feelings, .. which make it up and make its existence possible. The exhibition Private Universes - through the work of artists composed of video installations, performances, photographs and paintings - intends to show how the home becomes an extension of the individual. As it becomes the place where man builds his identity, recognizing in the treatment which is established with the space that welcomes him and makes him become himself. Hence the fact of the exhibition being realized in a private apartment. In addition to causing a reflection about the exhibition spaces and the differentet possibilities of them, the aim is to show the symbiotic relationships between the private space that we call home and the individual.
